Tips On Preparing Your Car To Be Towed

Kylie Torres

Your car has probably jammed in the middle of nowhere, and you need road assistance. This is the ideal time to contact a towing service. However, the towing service will not just come and tow your vehicle from the ground. Here are some measures you need to take before your car is towed.

Mechanical Adjustments

First, your car's parking brake is most likely engaged. Remember, if your car is towed with the parking brake engaged, damage may occur. If your towing professional forgets to check the vehicle before towing it, make sure you disengage the parking brake.

Also, if your vehicle was disabled while it was in 4-wheel drive, ensure you disengage it before it is moved. When a vehicle is towed while it is in 4-wheel drive, the drive train could get damaged. Another important mechanical adjustment you need to do is straighten the wheels. It is usually difficult to tow a car whose tires are turned in one direction.

Remove Personal Items

For security purposes, make sure you remove all personal effects from your car before it is towed. Many towing services don't have insurance for personal items in your car. Therefore, limit the value of the items stored in your car.

If you leave some items in the car, close the windows to prevent them from falling out during the towing process. Closing the windows also prevents dirt or debris from getting in during transport. Furthermore, in case of an unexpected storm, your vehicle is safe from damage if the windows are shut.

Take Pictures of Your Vehicle

While towing services offer exceptional repairs, you need to be specific about the damage to your car that you want to be fixed. Before the tow truck arrives, take pictures of your car. These pictures will be significant should any damage occur while the car is in transit. For example, getting your car onto the tow truck may cause severe body scratches.

Also, major damage can result if a truck driver makes a sudden stop while on the road. Therefore, the pictures are a precautionary measure to show the extent of damage to the vehicle before it was towed.

Towing services can be indispensable when you are stuck on the road. Whether you have trouble with your engine, brakes, or any mechanical damage, you can rely on these services to bail you out. Make sure you conduct thorough research and compare quotes from different towing companies to find the right one for you.
