A few months ago, my truck quit on the way to work. Since I work and live in a rural area, finding someone to give me a lift to the city isn't always easy. Luckily, my employer sent a tow truck driver to help me out. The driver towed my car to a shop in town to get it repaired. The driver also offered a few tips on how to stay safe in a rural area. New Driver Tips For Dealing With Breakdown Risks

Kylie Torres

As a new teen driver, you're faced with a lot of firsts. In addition to your first car and that first outing on your own, it's important to be prepared for the eventuality of that first breakdown. It's easy to dismiss the risk of breakdown if your car seems to be running fine or is brand new. What many new drivers fail to recognize is that mechanical failures and accidents can happen at any time, so you should always be prepared. Here are a few tips to help you be better able to communicate with the tow company simply by being attentive to the situation.

Watch For Landmarks

When you're enjoying your new independence, it's easy to get lost in the sense of freedom and not necessarily be attentive to where you are. Since there's no predictability to the risk of breakdowns, it's important that you pay attention to your surroundings as you drive. Watch for any potential landmarks or mile markers so that you have something to tell the tow truck company to help them locate where you are. This will help reduce the time you spend sitting on the side of the road waiting while the driver tries to find you.

Know The Signs Of Trouble

Many new drivers are unfamiliar with some of the common warning signs of impending car issues. By familiarizing yourself with some of the things you should be watching for, you might be able to recognize a problem before it turns into a disaster. In addition, spotting warning signs may help you determine if you actually need a tow or if you can just drive to your nearest service shop.

For example, if your temperature gauge is climbing but not yet in the red zone, pull off into your nearest service center before the car actually overheats. That way, you can isolate the source of the problem before it leaves you stranded. Overheating can be caused by many things, including a seized water pump, coolant leak or even insufficient oil.

If your electrical system seems to be cutting in and out, it's important that you find somewhere safe to stop. If you cannot pull into a service center, you'll want to call a tow truck. Don't try to drive a car that's struggling with electrical interruptions. Check the battery connections, the alternator and the wiring harness to see if there are any visible issues, otherwise have it towed to ensure your safety.

You should also familiarize yourself with the way that a car reacts when the brakes are worn or the lines are damaged. Losing pressure in the brake system can be a serious problem, so you need to know how to recognize those symptoms. In addition, knowing what the car feels like when it runs out of gas may help you recognize a faulty gas gauge and pull the car over before you cause an accident.

As a new driver, it's common to feel like you're somewhat invincible. Before you find yourself in a dangerous position where you aren't sure what's wrong or where you are, use these tips to help you be better prepared. Talk with a towing company like A-1 American Towing Inc for more guidance.
