Owner-Operators: Why A Roadside Assistance Plan Might Not Be Worth It

As an owner-operator who spends a lot of time on the road, you might think that paying for a roadside assistance plan is a smart use of resources and a good way to prevent yourself from being stranded. However, there is a chance that it might not be worth it after all. These are a few reasons why.
You May Not Be Able to Use it in All Areas
Depending on the type of driving that you do, there is a chance that you might not be able to use the plan when you need it. You might travel all over the country, and if you do, you might find that there are no services available in certain cities or states. Many of these roadside assistance plans include so-called national coverage, but the selection of services can be limited in some areas.
You Might Not Use it Frequently
If you keep your truck well maintained, you may not have to deal with many breakdowns at all. Even if you do, if you know how to perform certain repairs yourself, you might find that you don't even need to use the roadside assistance plan very often. You could end up paying more monthly or annually for your roadside assistance plan than you would spend for occasional services.
It Might Not Offer the Most Convenient Options
If you use one of these services, you have to use the providers that are included and the services that they offer. In some cases, this might not be the most convenient option. For example, if you have a load in your truck that you are trying to haul, you might prefer to use a towing service that offers roadside services; then, you may be able to have your truck worked on on the spot rather than having it towed to a shop. Depending on your plan, this service might not be available to you, and you might be better off hiring your own outside service rather than going through a company that participates in your roadside assistance plan.
As you can see, using a roadside assistance plan might not be the best choice in many cases. Instead, you may want to provide some of your own maintenance and repairs and then use a semi towing company, like Glen's Towing & Road Service, as-needed. Then, you don't have to worry about any of these three problems when you're dealing with an issue with your truck.
